Day/Theme: June 4 - “O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart."
Series: Fruits Basket
Character/Pairing: Tohru, Rin, mentions of Haru and various other Sohmas
Rating: PG
Warnings: some spoilers for volumes 14+
Rin Sohma knows she can be an absolute bitch at times. She knows she isn’t a kind person and she makes no effort to be one. She’s seen what life can do to kind people and it scares her. She doesn’t want to be like that.
Tohru Honda is a kind person. She can’t help it. She’s simply incapable of letting people get hurt; sometimes the mere thought of unkindness can leave her in tears. Rin feels sorry for her, and therefore dislikes her.
Rin may not be kind, but she is absolutely selfless. Admittedly this is partly due to her very low self-esteem, but she always has and always will put other people’s happiness before her own. Haru will testify that this sometimes hurts the people that she makes such sacrifices for as much as it hurts her.
At first Tohru is afraid of Rin. Then she meets the real Rin – collapsed on Shigure’s living-room floor, splattered with vomit and delirious, begging that Tohru not be angry – and becomes determined to help her.
Rin doesn’t want Tohru’s help. She doesn’t want anyone’s help. But Tohru is stubborn. No matter that Rin tries to drive her away; she keeps coming back. In that sense, Rin thinks, she’s a bit like Haru.
Tohru wants to break the curse. She wants to see Kyo free of the constant threat of being locked away. She wants Yuki to be free to be himself. She wants everyone freed from Akito’s stranglehold over their lives. She wants to end the banquet.
Rin wants to break the curse. For Haru’s sake. And now, also, for Tohru’s. She’s come to see that Tohru will crumble under the weight of all she’s taken on if it goes on much longer.
So Rin supports Tohru, and Tohru supports Rin. If one of them stumbles, the other will be there to help her up. They have both promised themselves that they will live to see the end of the Sohma curse. They keep moving forward.

Date: 2007-06-05 12:21 pm (UTC)Good, but you skipped a beat and it felt a bit wonky after that, though by the end it had more or less righted itself.
Could do with a bit of polishing, making it a bit more interesting to read, though I know that is unlikely to happen with 31 days drabbles (or at least with me anyway)
And er... can't say much abotu anything else.
