Title: tree at the end of the world
Day/Theme: June 6 - deep roots
Fandom: Original, one-off
Characters/pairing: umm... none?
Rating: G
Warnings: Probably plagiarising multiple mythologies
At the end of the world, they say, there is a tree. Its roots reach deep under the earth, while its branches hold up the sky. They say that its leaves are of all colours, and no colour at all, and that its heartwood is made of flint and rock crystal.
They say that strange creatures live in the tree at the end of the world. Animals long extinct burrow among the roots. In the hollows of the trunk live elf-folk, spirits, and shades. The creatures that nest among the branches are like nothing ever seen in this world; it is said that they will walk the earth only when the last man and woman have died and fallen to dust.
They say that one day the tree will fall. It has fallen before, and risen anew as a seedling. They do not say what will happen when it falls, but speak of the event in hushed voices with eyes averted. It will happen soon, they say. They think that the world will change, but they cannot say how.
