I've reread a whole lot of Fruits Basket lately and have been pondering the story and its characters again. I remember the first time I read it I was expecting a comedy-romance with a bit of drama thrown in, and I was surprised by how angsty it got, although I liked the extra depth that the darker elements added to the storyline.
spoilers for the entire series and more rambling )

I started reading the books a couple of weeks ago because I wanted to read them before the movie came out. I raced through the first one and it just stuck in my head, so I went out and bought the second and devoured it in an afternoon. The third took me a bit longer because I was finding it a bit too grim, but I finished it the day I saw the movie and the ending made me cry in a good way.

I now have an account on Archive of Our Own. I've posted a couple of old fics there, and it may motivate me to start writing new stuff. You can find me here. If you want an invite, comment on this post or pm me.

...Not that I'm around much anyway. Well, I lurk a lot, but I tend not to comment or post much. Shyness + ADD = not the best recipe for LJ success.
Anyway, I won't even be lurking for the next week or so because I'm leaving tomorrow for an eight-day geology field trip. I think I'll enjoy it, although I'm not so enthusiastic about the fact that I'll only have a day to recover before lectures start up for the year.
and now for the fandom talk )
lace_agate: (mechanical bird)
ADD is annoying. Not being able to find a job sucks. I am sick and tired of politicians talking about climate change and then not doing anything.
Fandom-related essays are cool. Over-analysing fandom is fun. I even have some essay topics in mind about fandom. If I list them here I might actually write them sometime:
-Air Gear, why I love it, and why aspects of it make me deeply uncomfortable (some form of feminist analysis)
-The awesome portrayal of women in Fullmetal Alchemist
-Related to the above: the roles of Riza and Winry in FMA and their links to female archetypes
-The Immortals arc and coming-of-age motifs in Naruto (I actually started this one... don't know if I'll ever finish it though)
And, because I feel like it, here are some really interesting fandom essays from other people:
Labyrinth as feminist myth
Feminism in Bleach
...Dammit, I know there are more than that. Well, I am leaving out some of the more controversial/argumentative shipping essays, but there are others
Ooh, here's another one (sort of): Sherwood Smith on modern reinterpretations of Jane Austen books. She also has quite a few other essay-type things on her journal.

I had two essays due this week and I've got another one due next week.  I have been busy, but I'm taking a break at the moment.  The weather here is foul - cold and windy, mainly, which normally I wouldn't mind except it's really cold and really really windy.  It's been like this for a few days and is expected to stay like this until sometime next week.
I've also got a cold.  It was worst on Thursday, which was also when I had to write the bulk of my Earth Science essay.  I did manage to get it finished and I handed it in yesterday morning.  I'm feeling better today.
I also have a new fandom. [ profile] shadowsinfire finally convinced me to read Katekyo Hitman Reborn!  And, well once I got past the first 50 chapters or so (which are basically filler), I started to really enjoy it.

Possibly spoilery for Reborn!; discussion of shipping and what people read for )
Also, I got a book in the university bookshop sale about urban legends, UFO sightings and the (allegedly) paranormal in New Zealand.  Written by the head of the NZ Skeptics' Society.  I haven't read much of it yet, bud did you know that meteorites and shooting stars were considered myths by the scientific establishment until the beginning of the nineteenth century?
Also: obligatory aliens in Palmerston North tag.

I have just read City of Glass, the third book in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments trilogy.  Sure, it's definitely not great literature - it's somewhat overwritten and under-edited - but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Spoilers under the cut )
Anyway, I recommend it to CLAMP fans (angst, messed-up relationships, love dodecahedron, urban fantasy, subtext etc.) and to urban fantasy fans and generally to most of my friends.

spoilers for recent chapters of Bleach, Naruto, Tsubasa and Holic )
Also, I highly recommend the manga Someday's Dreamers.  It's only two volumes long, but it's lovely.  The central concept is kind of like xxxHolic or Kobato (somewhere in between) and the tone of the store is more like the later volumes of Fruits Basket.

Describe pairings in fifteen words or less, and have your flist guess their identities.

1.  Cute ditzy girl meets gruff grumpy boy: one day she might heal his heart.
2.  Platonic or otherwise, they share a bond of absolute trust.
3.  Students, chefs, guardians of their country: in every world, they're together.
4.  He left because of his crush on her, but she tracked him down.
5.  She's convinced she's a burden; he becomes stronger for her sake.
6.  It'd be nice to sit and chat without kidnapping, flight and war to distract them.
7.  She seeks death; he teaches her that there is joy in life.
8.  He gave him a name, a home, and another chance at life.
9.  The princess and her knight in shining glasses.
10.  "Would you kill me if you had to?"  "Yes."  "Promise?"
11.  They met in the slums of London and were reunited in a palace.
12.  The colour of Life is just one of the things their species disagree on.
13.  He defeats her, she saves his life and teaches him some valuable life lessons.
14.  That's one hell of an age gap.
15.  She'll always be there to guard his back.

I'll leave this for a couple of days before updating with answers.

They've been playing Tsubasa soundtrack music at the gymnastics events at the Olympics. Only sometimes, but still. I heard "When Two Powers Collide" and my sister heard Kurogane's theme tune earlier.

I just saw someone quote the parental advisory notice for volume one of the Black Lagoon manga: Black Lagoon is rated M for Mature and is recommended for mature readers. This volume contains graphic violence, strong language, nudity, adult situations, drinkin', smokin', ass-kickin', law-breakin', gun-love, running with scissors and just about everything your mother ever told you not to do.
I lol'd.

Some mad ultra-conservative "scientist" person is saying that homosexuality is wrong and evil, etc., because the sex is apparently hotter.  How would he know anyway?
Blog entry with quotes from said mad ultra-conservative "scientist" person
(Link probably not worksafe unless your work involves studying sexuality and/or US politics)

Also, apparently those crazy Tsubasa spoilers have been confirmed.  I'm not going to say it's spoiled the story for me or anything, but it could spoil the story if they don't explain it properly.
